Blog 19: Answer 2

EQ: What is the best way to raise and train a guide dog?
Answer 2: One of the best ways one can train a guide dog, is to praise the puppy after she has successfully done a command correctly.

Evidence:

1)While I was attending a puppy kindergarten class the main thing they always told me is to praise my puppy to let them know they are doing a good job. Whether when it was when we called her to come or when she was climbing stairs we always had to tell her that she was a good girl and she was doing a good job.

2) In the Guide Dogs of America Puppy Manual there is a whole section on the commands that we are aloud to teach our puppy, and after that section there is a whole section on praise. In this section of the puppy manual you learn that the only real way to train a puppy without the aid of training aids is to use praise. Praise when training your puppy is a great way of letting your puppy know that she is doing a good job. After you have been giving praise to your puppy for a week, she waits until you praise her, then she happily moves on to the next command.

3) From personal experience, while i am raising my puppy, i can say that i would have never been able to teach her any of the commands she knows if i had not been able to use praise. From what i saw and observed, praise is what gives the puppy confidence and the will to do something new if they have their mommy,or daddy, there cheering them on.
