Blog 26: 2 hour

Name Tanya Figueroa   Topic: Guide Dogs Presentation Teacher: Mr. Navaroli

EQ: What is the best way to raise and train a guide dog?
Classroom Theme: For my theme I will have posters of my GDA puppy doing the different Guide dogs of America commands.

Sponge Activity:
1. What is the activity:
2. How it will be done (materials included):
3. How the activity relates to answer:

Introduction: Hello everyone my name is Tanya Figueroa; this is my assistant Emanuel and my guide dg puppy in training Havana. My essential question is what is the best way to raise and train a guide dog? When I say guide dog I mean a dog that has been specifically trained to lead visually impaired people around various obstacles. My plan for the day is to first address my E.Q., show my product and conclude with my conclusion.

Foundation: For foundation I will be talking and explaining the puppy breeder program. The students will need to know key G.D.A. terms that I am going to be teaching them.

A 1: Consistency when teaching the G.D.A commands         Time: 9 min
Information taught: In this section I will be teaching the importance of having consistency when teaching the G.D.A commands. During the presentation I may start doing demonstration with my puppy depending on how she is behaving.

Answer 1 Activity:
Time: 7 min
1. Activity is a video.
2. I will have a video of a trainer training their dog with consistency and I will have the students tell me how the trainer is being consistent.
3. This activity relates to my answer because I am teaching the importance of consistency when teaching the G.D.A. commands and I will have a trainer showing how consistency is done.
4. Internet connection, projector and paper for the students to write what they see.

A 2: Praise after doing a command correctly                Time: 9 min
Information taught: In this section I will teach different forms of praise and which is used by the G.D.A program and why. During the presentation I may start doing demonstration with my puppy depending on how she is behaving.

Answer 2 Activity: Time: 10 min
1. Use my puppy to show consistency.
2. I will have the students stand in a circle around me and my puppy Havana. I will first demonstrate what I want from them, then I will ask a student to do what I just did.
3. This activity relates to my E.Q. because the name of the game is called the name game in the name game we first call the puppy then praise, ask her to sit, praise and finally ask her to stand then praise again.
4. One puppy and treats to keep the puppies attention.

Answer 3: Proper use of baby gates                         Time: 6 min
Information taught: I will explain why baby gates and playpens are essential to raising your puppy.

Answer 3 activity:
No activity planned.

A 4: Proper use of training tools.       Time: 9
Information taught: In this section I will be teaching the importance of different training tools that we are allowed to use. I will demonstrate how to use the different tools.
A 4 activity
No activity planned.

Best Answer:    Time 1 min
After doing all my service learning I feel that the best answer I have is consistency when teaching the Guide Dogs of America commands.

Sources:          Time: 1:30 min
1. G.D.A. Puppy Manual, book

2. Cindy Miller area puppy leader, interview

3. Carol Kopman, interview

Product:            Time: 1 min
My product is that I am now a better dog trainer, when I  first started I really had no idea what to do and how to deal with a puppy but now I am more confident when training her and I am able to react  better to her different actions.

Conclusion:      Time: 1 min.
In conclusion my E.Q. is, what is the best way to raise and train a guide dog and my best answer to my E.Q. is consistency when teaching the G.D.A commands.

Blog 24: Independent Component 2

Literal (a) Statement saying: “I, student name, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.” I, Tanya Figueroa, affirm that i completed my independent component which represents 30+ hours of work. (b) Explanation of what you completed. Throughout second semester i have followed the guide lines stated in my Puppy manual of how i must train my puppy. During this time i have also attended monthly puppy meetings and Saturday puppy school at the Guide Dogs of America grounds. Interpretive Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work. I have worked very hard on my independent component, my proof of this is my puppy. She now responds better to commands the first time they are given. To achieve this i had to work daily on improving her skills, and by working daily i completed and passed the required 30 hours of work. Applied How did it help you answer your EQ? Be specific and use examples. By training my puppy on a daily basis it helped to answer my EQ, because as i was training my puppy, I was able to see exactly what is the best way to train a puppy. Now i can say with confidence that the best way to train a dog is to change the methods as she grows and matures. When she was a little 8 weeks old puppy the only way for sure to get a response from her was to use her kibble as bribery. Now that she is older and i have weened her off that method of training, she is just as happy when i verbally and physically praise her. Who did you interview: Teo Crisanto What day and time: Monday 4/23/12 Content: You will be asking an assigned junior some questions and giving them feedback regarding their senior project ideas. It is your job to document the experience on the blog. (1) What ideas do you have for your senior project and why? their answer For my senior project I'm thinking about doing something that deals with science, either biology or chemistry. What feedback did you offer when you heard the topic ideas? I told him that if he wanted to do a science related project, for independent learning they would have to take a class to get their hours. I also told him that it might be hard to get hour for service learning. (2) What do you plan to do to complete the 10 hours of service learning (working with an expert) which is due prior to senior year starting? Note: They also have to complete the 50 hours during the school year. their answer To complete my 10 hours of service learning, I plan to take a class in the summer at mnt sac. What feedback did you offer them in response? Classed are great places to start, especially when you are dealing with science related topics you'll have a clear understanding of what your topic, whether its chemistry or biology is about. (3) What do you hope to see or expect to see when watching the class of 2012 present their two hour presentations? their answer I hope to see well rehearsed and professional presentations. I also hope to see what they have learned at I poly through out the years and how they have applied it to their project. What suggestions did give them regarding how they should approach watching the 2 hour presentations? I told him that since he wants to do a science senior project, he should switch into any of the science presentations if he can. (4) What questions do they have about senior project? What additional recommendations would you give the 2013 student about senior project? Be specific and note what you told them. questions they had "What is science fair?" What additional recommendations did you give them? I told him that he should pick a topic that he is really passionate about and one that he knows where he could go and complete all his hours.

Blog 22: Answer 3

EQ: What is the best way to raise and train a guide dog?
Answer 3: An important factor in raising a guide dog is to puppy proof your home to provide a safe and secure environment for your puppy to grow.

Evidence:

1: From what I've experienced in my independent and service learning your home is where your puppy can get into the most trouble even if you are watching her. This is why it is important to use baby gates and exercise pesto keep your puppy in a area that you have deemed safe. The most common room to keep your puppy is in the living room or the kitchen, these areas are usually the safest seeing that there are few things in the floor for your puppy to eat.

2: Our puppy leaders could not stress more the importance of checking, from your Puppys point of view, if the area that you have your puppy is safe or not. She has told me that once you check an area you must check it again and again, you can never be too careful.

3. Other more experienced puppy raiser have given me a good warning about checking everywhere your puppy is going to be. To be certain you even have to crawl around on your stomach to get a good view of any cables or furniture labels that might look tempting for a puppy.

Title: Puppy Proofing your home and your self
Source: help with pet training
pgs: 2

Puppy Proofing your home and your self
L: Puppy proofing has to be more thorough then baby proofing because puppies can escape easier.
I: they can also knock down baby gates

L: many baby toys and accessories cannot be used for puppies seeing that they were not made sturdy enough to handle a puppy
I: most baby gates can hold a puppies weight.

L: puppies chew, so you need to place all electrical cords, plastics, plants and anything that is small enough to be swallowed out of your puppies reach.
I: this include trash cans seeing that they will knock them over and begin to eat whatever they can get your paws on, leaving you to open their mouths and grab what they are chewing out.(i experienced this)

L: to prevent your puppy from running away from you while they are outside keep them on leash so you can control them better.
I: this is better then having them running around all crazily leaving them to destroy everything that they touch.

L: a another good way to help with puppy proofing your house is to set boundaries in your home and to teach them how to deal with new situations
I: exposure so they don't react surprised or scared in a new situation.

L: if your puppy looks for you to have a good time then they will be less willing to go off on their own which will lead to trouble.
I: Have the puppy think of you as their mommy.

Title: Ear Care for Dogs
Pgs: 1

L: because of the design of the inner workings of a dogs ear, it is easy for parasites, bacteria and yeast to hide and thrive in them.
I: Simple cleaning methods is to clean them with a paper towel and warm water.

L: Infections can be caused by trapped debris.
I: Again simple cleaning gets rid of this.

L: Inner-ear skin is delicate so take care to not damage anything in your dogs ear.
I: never clean your dogs ears with q tips.

L: frequent bathing and swimming can lead to irritation and infections.
I: you can place cottons balls in your dogs ear to catch any unwanted water that can enter your dogs ears.

L: If your dog is prone to infections you can place ear drying solution to evaporate any water trapped inside
I: always use store bought ear cleaners for dogs, nothing that is made for humans

Title: How to walk your dog on a loose leash
Pg: 2

L: leash pulling can damage a dogs windpipe permanently.
I: leash pulling is both dangerous for the owner and the dog

L: If you are constantly pulling on your dog they will be constantly pulling back.
I: leather leashes are easier on your hands if you do have to pull back on the leash.

L: if your dog starts to get distracted change the direction that you are walking in so you can get his attention back.
I: don't let walking become a boring thing to do

L: if you teach your dog that sticking by your side is fun and exciting, your pup will be more willing to loose leash walk with you.
I: trust and a bond with your puppy is also important, if your dog doesn't like you she wont listen to you.

pgs: 2
author: Veterinary Reference

Exercise for Dogs
L: dogs have had to adjust to our sedentary life styles as apposed to their natural active lifestlye.
I: is not normal for dogs to be couch potatoes.

L: this lack of exercise eventually leads to behavioral problems.
I: lack of exercise leads to chewing, jumping and digging.

L: modern dogs lack opportunities to exercise, they need a partner or you to play with them. they aren't going to be running around in the back yard all on their own.
I: You have to play with her to make her exercise.

L: common behavioral problems are destructive chewing, digging, scratching, night-time activity, jumping on people, rough playing and biting, barking & whining.
I: simple ways to fix this is to walk your puppy until she is hella tired.

L: exercising and playing with your dog helps to eliminate behavior problems, helps to reduce digestive problems and constipation, creates trust, keeps your dog's weight in check.

Title: Stop Dog Barking
pgs: 2
Source: help with pet training

L: barking is one of the hardest bad behaviors to break. excessive barking can be caused by being lonely, bored, frustrated, or frightened.
I: walking and play time can help with barking, i think

L: best way to stop dog barking is to keep your pet active and socialized. if you never let your puppy leave your house then all noises will sound strange and alarming.
I: again walking will help to keep this in check.

L: if you exercise and mentally stimulate your dog then she will sleep more and become less aware of outside noises.
I: swimming is a big energy user

L: teaching your dog obedience will also tire your puppy out and the experience will be a nice moment for you to bond with your puppy/dog.
I: must keep in mind that you are their play mate and parent, make sure they know the difference.

L: providing your puppy with stimulating toys will keep your puppy occupied and active while you are able to rest.
I: chew toys can keep a pup entertained up to an hour.

Blog 20: Room Creativity

(1) How do you plan to address the room creativity expectation?
I plan to address the room creativity expectations by covering the walls with black cloth to make the room look cleaner and neater. On top of the black cloth I plan to blow up different pictures of guide dogs in training doing the different commands and to show the different breeds. I think I'm going to either take out the desks and make them sit on the floor or see if I can get enough chairs and make a semi circle so I can have enough room to do my activities.

(2) What activity ideas do you have for answer 1 or 2?
I'm not sure what I want to do for answer 1 activity because I'm not sure how to show consistency in training.

For answer 2 since my answer is praise I want to have the kids make a giant circle in the class room with Havana and I standing in the center and make one of the students call Havana, praise her, make her sit and then praise her again and let another student call her and do the same.

Puppy Proofing your Home
L: puppies can eat cabinets, furniture, carpet and damage a wide variety of other things.
I: not only will you have to pay for the repares, you will also have to pay to have your puppies stomache pumped of foreign material.

L: Simple and easy solution for this is crating up your puppy. A crate is a container made up of wire or mesh and is able to hold your puppy comfortably.
I: other solutions are fencing off part of your house or garden so your puppy won't be able to get into trouble. Make sure you also puppy proof the fenced off area so your puppy will not eat anything like rocks or poisonous plants.

L: Puppies are still too immature to handle temptations such as plastic bags, feathers, shoes... Moste dogs depending on the breed gain maturity when they're about 6 months old.
I: puppies are exactly like babies you gotta be watching them at all times to make sure they don't eat anything that will make them choke and die.

L: puppies are smaller and more active then human babies, not to mention they have claws and teeth making that easier to get into things. Important things you need to look out for are electrical wires seeing that they can give your puppy a nasty shock.
I: Apparently if your puppy never gets electricuted then you are doing a great job.

L: next step of puppy proofing is teaching the puppy what is acceptable to chew on and what isn't.
I: to do this there are a variety of training tools you can use; such as biter apple spray. Biter apple leaves a biter stain without staining whatever you are spraying. Use this spray as a training aid never depend on it to keep your puppy out of trouble.

L: At 4 to 5 months puppies will begin to get their permenant teeth.
I: that means a lot more biting!

L: some things you can do to help ease the pain of the new teeth is to freeze a wet towel to help numb the pain of the new teeth and to soften the kibble a little bit with warm water.
I: have to heck with Cindy to see if these are GDA approved methods.

L: puppies loose their teeth in a pattern first the front ones, premolars, molars, and then finally the canine teeth.
I: bleeding(ew) is normal and should cause no concern when puppies loose their teeth.

L: a puppy will never release where it sleeps, unless the crate is too large, there are soft blankets to obsorb the mess or the puppy has been in there too long and cannot hold it any longer.
I: use the fact that the puppy never pees where they sleep, crate a pee schedule that both you and your puppy can follow.

L: two important rules of house training are puppies have to go pee after eating and after waking up.

Blog 19: Answer 2

EQ: What is the best way to raise and train a guide dog?
Answer 2: One of the best ways one can train a guide dog, is to praise the puppy after she has successfully done a command correctly.

Evidence:

1)While I was attending a puppy kindergarten class the main thing they always told me is to praise my puppy to let them know they are doing a good job. Whether when it was when we called her to come or when she was climbing stairs we always had to tell her that she was a good girl and she was doing a good job.

2) In the Guide Dogs of America Puppy Manual there is a whole section on the commands that we are aloud to teach our puppy, and after that section there is a whole section on praise. In this section of the puppy manual you learn that the only real way to train a puppy without the aid of training aids is to use praise. Praise when training your puppy is a great way of letting your puppy know that she is doing a good job. After you have been giving praise to your puppy for a week, she waits until you praise her, then she happily moves on to the next command.

3) From personal experience, while i am raising my puppy, i can say that i would have never been able to teach her any of the commands she knows if i had not been able to use praise. From what i saw and observed, praise is what gives the puppy confidence and the will to do something new if they have their mommy,or daddy, there cheering them on.

Product: New skills obtained to train puppies.

As of March my product is, my new skills at training puppies. Before i started my research and my independent component i had no idea how to go about training a puppy, or even a dog for that matter. After doing research and receiving my Guide Dogs of America Puppy Manual, i learned a variety of ways you can teach a puppy a new command, which include kibble and praise training.

Evidence: Here are two different pictures of my puppy Havana doing two commands, stand and sit.

I will meet my 30 hour requirement because i have my puppy with me everyday and everyday i have to train her.

(3) How does your independent study component relate to your EQ?

My independent component relates to my EQ because my EQ is, "What is the best way to raise and train a guide dog", since i have my guide dog puppy at my home, i am completing the raising and training sections in my EQ.

Blog 15: Independent Component 1

Literal
(a) Statement saying: “I, student name, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
(b) Explanation of what you completed.

(A) I, Tanya Figueroa, affirm that i completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.

(B) For my independent component i have completed the required 30 hours by training my guide dog puppy. During the 30 hours i have taught my puppy sit, how to kennel up and to respond to her name, lately i have been introducing new commands such as; down, leave it and quiet.

Interpretive
Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.

I can prove that i have worked 30+ because i have successfully taught my puppy, Havana, sit and her name. No matter what Havana is doing or distracted by i can just say "Havana sit" and she will respond in less then 20 seconds. With teaching Havana her name it was trickier because i had to make her only look at me when i say "Havana" but come to me when i say "Havana come".

Applied
How did it help you answer your EQ? Be specific and use examples.

My independent component helps to answer my EQ by addressing the raising and training section in my EQ. Since my puppy is living with me i am basically her mom, i groom, feed and take care of her every need. As a requirement in receiving my puppy, from GDA, i must train her on a daily basis.
By having her in my house and training her, i get a first hand experience on what it takes to train a puppy instead of just reading on how much work and dedication it takes.

Blog 13: Answer 1

(1) What is answer 1 to your EQ? Be specific in your answer.

I believe that the first answer to my essential question is that you need consistency in training.

(2) What possible evidence do you have to support this answer?

When I attend puppy classes and meetings, I have observed that the guide dog raiser is constantly giving their puppy a job to do, by job i mean a command ex: sit, down, quiet, stay, ect. By always having the dog perform a job, this will keep your puppy in control and will get him used to following commands the first time they are given.

(3) What source(s) did you find this evidence and/or answer?

I found this evidence from observation and from my puppy hand book. In my puppy handbook it says, at the very minimum, that i should be giving the puppy 20 repititions of the same command, so through out the day i should be practicing one command over 20 times.

Blog 12: Service Learning

Where are you working for your service learning?
For now i am observing different puppy age group classes at Guide Dogs of America every saturday.

Who is your contact?
I need to ask my puppy leader who is in charge of roll for the classes.

Summarize the services you have performed to complete the 10 hour requirement.
I have not yet completed the 10 hours, as of now I only have 2 hours. During the Saturday classes i am there as an observer, and while i was there i learned valuable information for puppies of different ages. I learned how to properly care for a puppy's teeth, how important it is for a puppy to respond when their owner calls them and that our puppy will go through behavioral changes as they get older.
