Blog 22: Answer 3

EQ: What is the best way to raise and train a guide dog?
Answer 3: An important factor in raising a guide dog is to puppy proof your home to provide a safe and secure environment for your puppy to grow.

Evidence:

1: From what I've experienced in my independent and service learning your home is where your puppy can get into the most trouble even if you are watching her. This is why it is important to use baby gates and exercise pesto keep your puppy in a area that you have deemed safe. The most common room to keep your puppy is in the living room or the kitchen, these areas are usually the safest seeing that there are few things in the floor for your puppy to eat.

2: Our puppy leaders could not stress more the importance of checking, from your Puppys point of view, if the area that you have your puppy is safe or not. She has told me that once you check an area you must check it again and again, you can never be too careful.

3. Other more experienced puppy raiser have given me a good warning about checking everywhere your puppy is going to be. To be certain you even have to crawl around on your stomach to get a good view of any cables or furniture labels that might look tempting for a puppy.
